About CX2

CX2 is an open data layer that makes a building's operational data accessible, understandable and usable, without creating a new dependency on a single vendor.

CX2 has been developed and tested on two pilot buildings, and development continues. This page explains where we come from, what we hold on to, what the six layers of CX2 are, and what comes next. Each layer has its own page.

01Where CX2 comes from

CX1 was founded in 2016 as an engineering firm with a single focus: commissioning of buildings, that is, verifying that a building performs as designed. The background was the experience that even good projects often end up as buildings that do not run as drawn. The faults sit in operation, and they show up in the data.

Data-driven commissioning therefore became a field of its own: systematic follow-up on operational data, so technical faults are caught in time and every kilowatt-hour turns into a good indoor climate.

That work ran into the same three obstacles in every building:

  • Access to data is limited. Data is scattered across subsystems, and even the building management system typically offers only trend curves for a few points, or manual exports to Excel.
  • Data is hard to understand. A point name like JK057_02_019A_J90_HF03_BPA004 only makes sense to someone who knows the plant. Mapping the points by hand is feasible for 10 points, not for 10,000.
  • Analyses across the building are too labour-intensive. With thousands of points, you test samples, not the whole building.

CX2 is the answer to those three obstacles. Not as yet another building management system, but as a data layer between the building's technical systems and the tools that need the data.

02What we hold on to

  1. The owner owns the data

Data is stored locally with the building owner, and it can be exported and taken along. CX2 is meant to reduce vendor dependency, not create a new one.

  2. The architecture can be inspected

Where the data is stored, which connections leave the building, and who has access must be possible to show. We would rather show how it fits together than ask for trust.

  3. Data must be understandable

A data point without context is not information. CX2 therefore describes the building as relations, so both people and software can work with the meaning of the data. How it works.

  4. The machines may be complicated. The communication may not.

We explain the technology in the order it makes sense: first the problem and the value, then the architecture, and finally the details.

03Status

CX2 is built in layers. Three of them you can get today. Three we are working towards. Each layer has its own page.

Hand-drawn overview of the layers of CX2: the building's systems, an air handling unit, a BMS cabinet and a meter, send data into the large box CX2 Open, which collects, stores, describes and shares. Arrows lead out of the box to a dashboard, a report and AI, analyses and tools, CX2's own or others. Below the box a technician at a server, CX2 Service: setup, and a person at a screen showing status OK, CX2 Care: operation, optional. On top of the box three dashed boxes marked planned: CX2 Hub, CX2 Commons and CX2 Algorithm.Tap for full size

CX2 Open

Available

The foundation of CX2: data collection from the building's technical systems, a local time-series database, a semantic model and tools for viewing and analysing data. By open we mean documented interfaces, exportable data and open data models, so other tools can build on top of the data layer.

Developed and tested on the pilot buildings in the Energy Cluster project.

CX2 Service

Available

Consulting and implementation from CX1: installation, integration with the building management system, mapping of data points, quality assurance of the semantic model, dashboards and commissioning analyses.

Read more about CX2 Service →

CX2 Care

Available

Operation of the local CX2 installation: monitoring, security updates, backup and support, so the building owner does not have to administer a server.

CX2 Hub

Planned

Overview across many buildings: comparison, benchmarking, central alarm handling and analyses that can be run on the whole portfolio at once.

Does not exist yet.

CX2 Commons

Planned

An idea: building owners voluntarily making anonymised data available for research and education under controlled terms. Data is protected. Knowledge is shared.

Requires external funding and has not been started.

CX2 Algorithm

Planned

The active layer on top of CX2 Open: algorithms that calculate setpoints and start times from the building's data and the Brick model, while the building management system continues to perform the control.

Does not exist yet.

04The Energy Cluster project

CX2 has been developed and tested among other things through AI-Cx, a proof-of-concept project under Energy Cluster Denmark.

The project investigates whether generative AI can automate the mapping of building data that is done by hand today: reading the building's documentation (diagrams, floor plans, point lists and 3D models) and translating it into a semantic model in Brick Schema and RealEstateCore.

CX2 itself uses Brick Schema. RealEstateCore is a related standard from the real estate sector, and the two are designed to work together.

It is being tested on two newly built educational buildings that have just been through traditional commissioning: TEC Ballerup and TietgenSkolen City in Odense (TCU).
